Introduction to the Discipline

1) Basic information of the discipline

The discipline is the "Double First-Class" discipline in Chongqing. It started to offer master degrees for the second-grade discipline of Materials Processing Engineering in 2003 and Materials in 2006, and then for the first-grade discipline of Materials Science and Engineering in 2011. There are 1 national specialty and 3 Chongqing first-class specialties, 8 provincial and ministerial level teaching and research platforms, 7 enterprise joint research centers and 12 postgraduate joint training bases. At present, there are more than 1900 undergraduates, 280 graduate students, 80 full-time teaching staffs including Chongqing academic and technological leaders and other high-level talents. Inthe past five years, the discipline received 60 million research funding.

The dicipiline has contributed greatly to the economic and social development of the Southwest China, especially Chongqing, by focusing on regional industrial demands, strengthening basic research and applied researches, highlighting the collaborative education mode between the industry and university. Now it has become an important talent training base and scientific research base for Materials Science and Engineering in Chongqing and even Southwest China.

2) Research directions and features

There are four research directions:①Preparation and forming of advanced metal materials;②Surface/interface behavior and performance control of materials;③Preparation and application of advanced functional materials;④Electronic micro-connection materials and special welding technologies.

Features:①The application research of low dielectric ceramics / glass materials is at the international leading level. We have brokenthrough the key technologyforpreparation of low dielectric high-performance special glass fiber and5G-usedsingle-layer microwave ceramic capacitor materials.②The basic research of polymer long afterglow luminescent materials is at advanced levelin the world. For thefirst timewe produced radiation dependent long afterglow polymer materials and developed new oil-free ink screen printing technology. The strategies for long afterglow polymer materials with multiple light-emitting centers to realize finecolor control was put forward.③The research on corrosion protection of Al-Li alloy was outstanding in China. We put forward a new theory fororientation-dependentlocalizedcorrosionin Al-Li alloys and a new model for failure of anodicoxidationfilms formed onAl-Li alloys. Further, we developed a new process suitable for sealing anodized Al-Li alloys.

3) Cultivation objectives and student sources

We pay great attention to the cultivation of students' practical ability and the ability to analyze/solve practical problems. Our students are expected to have solid basic theoretical knowledge and systematic professional knowledge. They also should know the latest development trend of the discipline. At the same time, they should grasp the abilities to carry out advanced processes and use advanced equipment, and the associated testing and evaluation technologies. These will enable the students to engage in scientific research and engineering activities independently after graduation. We have high-quality students and the first voluntary enrollment rate is above 80%.

4) Influence at home and abroad

This discipline has outstanding advantages in engineering R & D, and has established a close cooperative relationship with enterprises in Chongqing and surrounding areas. A number of achievements have been transformed into engineering application and won a number of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. At the same time, the teachers of this discipline have served as the vice-chairman of many industry associations / associations in Chongqing, as well as the editorial board members of dozens of important journals at home and abroad, published a large number of high-level academic papers, cultivated a number of high-quality graduates, and established good cooperative relations with relevant universities at home and abroad. All of these have significantly enhanced the influence of this discipline at home and abroad.
